Contemporary Realism: Important 21st Century Works at Sotheby's, NYC

July 16th - 26th, 2021
Artists selected from the Art Renewal Salon

As you know ARC’s mission has always been the re-appreciation of representational art. In the beginning it was a matter of preserving the knowledge because there were very few places around the world who were teaching the skills and very few artists who had mastered them. Now we have accomplished this part of the mission with a large number of schools and artists passing this knowledge on and thousands and thousands of properly trained artists creating masterful works of art.

The last piece of the puzzle that must occur is a solid secondary market, which is essential for representational artists to thrive. The primary market as I am sure you know is when someone purchases a work of art directly from the artist or through galleries, the secondary market refers to auctions and how a person who has purchased a work of art can re-sell it if they want to get their money back or hopefully make a profit on their investment. To date there are no major auction houses who have sales specifically for Contemporary Realism. However, a small handful have already broken through into this market. Artists such as Hiroshi Furuyoshi and Han Wu Shen, who both have examples of their works selling for over $100,000 at auction. For collectors and investors to feel confident spending tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars or even more on Contemporary Representational Art, they have to feel confident they are buying the works not only because they love it, but also as a reliable investment.

View the auction pages on the Sotheby’s website. You can also click on the overview tab if you want to see what Sotheby’s is saying about the sale. Read the Press Release.

In Memory of Karen Yee

We have some sad news to share with you...

The light emanating from the studio of Artist Karen Yee has been extinguished. On October 15, 2016, she left us to create art in a higher place.

Karen has been a long-standing member of IGOR since 2011 and has participated in several juried annual exhibitions. Although her work is completed, she lives on through her paintings and forever in our hearts and memories.

Karen Yee will be remembered and missed by all of us at IGOR. She will evermore remain part of our group and will remain listed on the Guild's website indefinitely.

Three Days of Art Events in Denver, CO  |  August 24th - August 26th

IGOR will be hosting several events beginning on Wednesday evening, August 24th through to the Artist's Reception on Friday evening, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, August 26th. We sincerely hope that many of our IGOR members, whether juried in the show or not, will make the trip to Denver later this summer and be a part of one of the largest realism exhibitions to be held in Colorado! We are thrilled to be holding our 11th Annual Exhibition at Gallery 1261 and are planning to have numerous events over a three day period. Several of the above events will be costly especially since all of our events are in downtown Denver so IGOR will need to charge an "event fee" for IGOR artists and guests. With much effort, IGOR has tried our best to keep costs down but at the same time we want to make it a grand and memorable week of art events. Please notify IGOR as soon as possible by email at: info@realismguild.com when you know that you will be coming to the 11th Annual Juried Exhibition. We strongly encourage IGOR artist members to come along with their guests.

Patricia Guzmán from Mexico City, IGOR Juried Member

A major How To article has been published in the Oct/Nov 2014 issue of International Artist Magazine, which is now for sale. Patricia's juried painting in this year's 9th IGOR show "Forgotten" is featured in an in-depth article.

"It's very moving that I'm being featured in the magazine. When I started the painting, I spent quite some time reading it trying to figure out how artists achieved effects. However it was the inspiration and motivation I found which makes it truly special, and can't thank the magazine enough for this." — Patricia

We are happy to announce the Art Renewal Center's 2013-2014 Salon. This will be our 10th annual competition in which some of the best contemporary realist artists in the world compete for recognition, cash prizes, and a chance to have their work seen by some of the more than 5,000,000 annual visitors to the ARC website, as well as in other reputable venues.

This year we will have press coverage in six magazines; Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine will be publishing an article on the top winners of the 2012-2013 Salon. In addition, Plein Air Magazine will be giving out a special award to one artist to be featured in their magazine. Also, for the first year ever, American Art Collector Magazine, Western Art Collector Magazine, American Fine Art Magazine, and International Artist Magazine will all be giving out awards as well. ARC Director of Operations, Kara Lysandra Ross, will write an article on the top winners for the Epoch Times, a large international newspaper that publishes in 19 languages.

The Best in Show winner of the 2013/2014 ARC Salon competition, in addition to $8,000, will be awarded with a fully produced and released video DVD produced by Streamline Art Video showing a demonstration of their technique, an interview with the artist, and a profile of the artist's work as a key featured part of a DVD on the ARC Salon.

This year we are offering $61,450 in cash awards, though with purchase awards sometimes being well above the minimum stated below, the total amount is often much higher. For example, in last year's competition paintings valued at over $200,000 were purchased. Participants can compete and win in 7 categories.

Liberty Wildlife Animal Presentation

Gallery at Tempe Center for the Arts

Noon-2pm, Sun., Nov. 10, Gallery
Artist Anne Peyton from the International Guild of Realism exhibition is also a volunteer bird handler with Liberty Wildlife. They have arranged a short free educational program for the TCA to highlight birds of the region. Event will be free to the public. Great opportunity for youth and adults alike to see the IGOR exhibition and get up close to nature!

The IGOR exhibition includes 91 artists and 10 of the featured artworks include bird imagery. Artists with bird imagery include: Anne Peyton, Barbara Rudolph, Sandra Blair, Paula Henchell, Louise Daoust, Colin Poole, Len Rusin, Heather Larsen, Camille Engel and Gary Davis Lang.

Liberty Wildlife believes strongly in connecting the public, especially children, with the natural world. Our Education group visits classroom and civic event settings with non-releasable wildlife. Well-trained presenters teach about the natural history of each animal, and tell how each came to be at Liberty Wildlife. They explain the place that the animal holds in the desert ecosystem, and point out adaptations to desert life. We explain the pressures that humanity places on the desert. It is a strong message of conservation delivered under the glowing yellow eyes of a great horned owl or in the presence of any of the Liberty education ambassadors.

IGOR's Allied Organizations

IGOR is now an allied organization with the Art Renewal Center since we have similar goals and mission statement. ARC is an educational foundation dedicated to the renewal of classical training in the arts. In addition to scholarships and hosting the largest online museum dedicated to traditional painting, they hold one of the most prestigious competitions for living artists who paint in the realist tradition.

Kara Lysandra Ross, Director of Operations of the Art Renewal Center, gave the keynote speech "Why Realist Art Matters" during our 7th Annual Exhibition "Weekend of Art Events" in Carmel, CA. Her speech was excellent and you can now read a full version of it by clicking here.
